2. Description

The Decontextualized Kinetic Energy of Letters from Textual Context

This audiovisual work takes individual letters—normally bound together to form textual context—as its primary material. The source text employed in the piece is excerpted from The Art of Noise by the Italian Futurist painter and composer Luigi Russolo (1885–1947). In Russolo’s call for a radical transformation of music, the letters that constitute his text are extracted and subsequently reconfigured through an algorithm developed by the artist.

While letters are undeniably human inventions, they can also be understood as dynamic entities capable of generating diverse meanings and forces through innumerable combinations. By isolating letters from their predetermined textual context, the work seeks to reveal the amorphous energy inherent in each individual character. This process foregrounds the latent potential of letters to exist as autonomous elements—energy units that may later be recomposed into entirely new contexts.

A modified version of the work, adapted through an interactive algorithm, was presented outdoors under the title Message. In this iteration, the scattering of letters—each carrying its own indeterminate energy—and their gradual convergence into new contextual formations were influenced by the movement of passersby. Through the presence and circulation of viewers, the work visualized a continuous process in which dispersed linguistic particles reorganize themselves into emergent structures of meaning.
