2. Description
What existed before an object was perceived? Because human vision cannot exceed the speed of light—and because visual recognition itself is made possible through light—what precedes perception can only be approached through inference, imagination, or belief. This work assumes that such a state may resemble a mass of energy, like magma: a continuous flow whose final form remains unknown until after the eruption of a volcano.
This condition can be understood both as the magma of mental activity and as the unavoidable physical phenomena of vibration and the scattering of light. The work describes this “domain of flow,” which is always ready to produce countless solidified images or completed forms of recognition, as presence. However, rather than employing static images, fixed forms, or symbolic representations, the work uses a living and moving subject—“you”—as its material.
A living subject reveals the energy of this flow. Before entering the category of recognition, the subject must have passed through a magma-like process of activity that eventually solidifies into a stabilized image. To address this transformation, the work presents the moment of completed recognition—when the subject comes into focus—as a static black-and-white image of the past. In contrast, the real-time movements of the present are expressed through vibrating forms and through the differentiation of light into spectral variations accompanied by sound.
Through this juxtaposition, the work attempts to visualize the energetic field that precedes recognition: a state in which forms have not yet stabilized, and where perception emerges from an ongoing flow of vibration, light, and transformation.
