2. Description
Humans perceive surrounding sounds within contexts in which they are produced and understood for a specific duration and under particular circumstances. The situational context of a sound therefore determines its character and emotional resonance. When speaking through language, humans also consider contextual conditions, selecting combinations of words that correspond to a given situation in order to construct sentences. If we consider that the individual phonemes within a sentence produce different outcomes depending on context and combinatory structures, one may ask what kind of energy these phonemes might possess when their situational context is removed. Such a question opens the possibility for an expanded perception and imagination of sonic language.
Like human language, the sounds that surround us could be divided into countless phonemic units according to different criteria. By removing the original context from which a sound emerges, the artist isolates fragments of sound as phonemic elements and recombines them in new ways. Through this process, the work reveals in real time the latent textures of sounds drawn from the audience and the surrounding environment.
Four speakers and microphones installed in the space function as independent speakers and listeners in their own right. For this reason, the audio devices are not concealed or decorated; instead, their original industrial forms are fully exposed to the audience. Sounds captured by the microphones undergo various processing stages before being reproduced through the speakers. The structure and expressive characteristics of the resulting sounds change according to the degree and movement of the visitors within the space. At the same time, visual mapping applied to the speakers responds to the sonic qualities being generated, varying in intensity in relation to the sound being articulated. Through this configuration, visitors activate the system by introducing their own energy into the installation space, engaging in a dynamic interaction with the processes of sound generation and transformation.
