2. Description
This performance was presented at the National Gugak Center Pungryu Sarangbang, bringing together improvisational musicians, a Korean traditional dancer, and contemporary dancers. I contributed improvisational guitar performance and visual art. The overall thematic framework and structural flow of the piece were developed through discussions initiated by the Korean traditional dancer Yoon Hojung. Each performer further developed their own artistic approach by drawing inspiration from the emotional trajectory of the traditional Korean dance form Salpuri.
The concept of 5 Rhythms movement practice connects five different rhythmic patterns, each representing distinct flows and emotional states. Through these shifting structures, the performance sought to evoke latent levels of consciousness embedded within everyday life, recreating them within a space of meditation and live performance. The practice itself forms part of a global movement established by Gabrielle Roth.
During the performance, I played two guitars in dialogue with the dancers’ movements, interpreting their gestures through improvised melodic lines and irregular rhythmic structures. The live sound unfolded as a responsive interaction with the performers’ physical expressions.
In addition, I created a visual component based on particle-generated 3D graphics. The visual work emphasized amorphous flows of energy suggested by elemental patterns circulating in the air, translating these invisible dynamics into a shifting visual field that accompanied the live performance.
